What are karats?
A karat is a measure of gold purity. Karats range from 1 to 24. 24K is the most pure, because it has 24 out of 24 parts gold. To be considered 24 Karat, it must be at least 99.9% pure gold. On the other hand, 14K indicates that there are 14 parts gold out of 24 total parts (14/24). That means that a 14K gold ring is 58.33% gold and 41.67% some other alloy.
Here’s a table of Karats with its associated percentages:
- 24K gold is pure gold, containing at least 99.9% gold
- 22K = 91.66% gold
- 20K = 83.33% gold
- 18K = 75% gold, contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 75% gold.
- 14K = 58.33% gold, contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 58.3% gold.
- 10K = 41.66% gold, contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts of one or more additional metals, making it 41.7% gold. 10K gold is the minimum karat that can be called “gold” in the United States.
Pure gold is too soft for most uses. To make jewelry using gold, we usually mix gold with another metal like copper or silver. Each karat indicates 1/24th of the whole. To understand it clearly, for a 20-karat gold piece of jewelry is made of metal that is 20 parts gold and 4 parts copper.
Gold rings are often marked with 18K, 14K or 10K to indicate its level of gold purity. A higher karat means more gold, and usually more expense.
What are carats?
Unlike karat which measures purity, a carat is a unit measuring weight for gold, precious stones and pearls, and is equal to 200 milligrams (0.200 grams). For those not familiar with grams, there are 453 grams in a pound (1,000 grams to a kilogram).
Where the measure of purity is comes from? A thousand years ago, the German called their gold coin a mark. It weighed 24 carats (4.8 grams). The purity of the gold coin(now karat) was conveyed in the number of carats of gold present in the coin, which always weight 24 carats.
Uniqueness of gold
Gold jewelry is both beautiful and wearer-friendly. Pure gold leaves no residue or stain on the wearer’s skin. Sometimes people have allergy or staining problems with metals alloys mixed with gold, but gold does not commonly do this.
Gold can be created in any shape, including tiny stands that do not break easily. For example, one twelfth carat of gold can be hammered into an ultra thin sheet that’s ten feet square. Gold can be designed any way by the skilful workers.
